Thao & Mirah - Folks

Show & Tell: Thao & Mirah

T.T. the Bears / Boston, MA (6/8/2011): what better way to start a vacation than to see a couple of empress’ brew up a downstairs fire wild enough to lava into the streets and forever mythologized the city of Boston as a bizarro Atlantis. suppose that’s how i just felt headin’ back to my stay for the night: like i was just some songstress’ smolder. that’s alrigh, ask Sisyphus, it shore beats rollin’ the boulder. if there were some existentialists at the show, then i can tell you that they most definitely walked away with some kind of belief. Thao & Mirah knocked sox off. there was just this pulpness about the whole performance, like they were just bringing what was ripest, what was the most palatable, what would dominate even the most sprucest fruit bowls to the table, and let me tell you this: i ate it up. seconds, yes, please. (the encore, they broke out some old mirah tracks). walking through the jangle-walk of their album, Thao & Mirah went for the scenic route. i was astounded by Thao’s spark & flare— that girl really gets it going, and mirah, she’s just the most ideal kind of i adore. the backing band were just as feverish as the two, rousing and ricocheting the crowd’s stomps and bomps (sometimes there aren’t words). there were good times all around—they commented much about the overall energy-cadence Boston was giving them as opposed to their other tour stops. this show is definitely going to encourage me to give a further look into Thao’s other work. and as for Mirah, well i needed something new to play-out like a pair of Ray Bans on, well, pretty much anybody these day; i’m glad to report that Mirah played 3 or 4 of her own songs as that was something that i was hoping to get to see. you know when you just need something good, some good that’s independent of your habitual life, that good that’s just good on its own terms (and nobody else’s for that matter)? well, that’s what this show was for me—a single goodness that i needn’t have to worry about dissolving. it’ll be good when i get home, it’ll be good when i wake up, it’ll be good when my future nephew smears his face with mud and plays bob for apples in the appleless family punch, and it’ll be good when Sisyphus needs a break from rolling that boulder and asks me to take the reigns for a while. i commemorated that goodness by picking up the record while i was there, and i’ll tell you this, it was a much, much, much better decision than that cold slice of pizza i bought for $3 while walking back to South Boston:
